Mets starting catcher John Buck was on WFAN this afternoon with Marc Malusis and was asked if the hype and the competition from Travis d’Arnaud was tough for a veteran catcher like himself. Buck’s response was the most honest, supportive and most refreshing thing I have heard from an athlete in a long time…

“I’m pretty secure in what I do and where I’ve been and I’m still only 32. It’s one of those things where if I just take care of my business, do what I’m capable of doing, it leaves it so I don’t have to look forward and worry, because if I do what I’m suppose to do and do what I need to do for the Mets, things will work out, for me and for the Mets. If it’s positive on both ends I think we will both be in better situations and if it’s a hard decision for the Mets, that’s a good thing for all of us. That means Travis is doing well, the Mets are doing well and so am I, so I think that’s a problem we can all live with.”

In today’s sports world, it’s shocking when an athlete isn’t selfish and supports healthy competition and younger players coming up. If this type of mentality is being shared within the Mets clubhouse, from all the other veteran players, 2013 is going to be the start of something special in the years to come in Queens.
